Lot 9: Bar-B-Que and Blues Party for twenty-four - BBQ for twenty-four guests at the home of Jennifer and Herb Lamb
- Music by Nashville-based R&B soul singer/songwriter Kira Small and her sideman/bassist Bryan Beller
This is the perfect Napa Valley Bar-B-Que; relaxed and casual with abundant food and world-class wine in a fabulous setting. Vintners Jennifer and Herb Lamb really know how to party and love to entertain. Join them on the spacious deck of their lovely home at the base of Howell Mountain where the views are surpassed only by the incredible food and wine you’ll be enjoying. To make the party participatory, guests are encouraged to bring a fun bottle of wine to share.
After the Bar-B-Que and the wine, the party will really get swinging when Kira Small and Bryan Beller take the stage. Come prepared to be knocked off your feet!
Kira Small sings with all the soul of classic R&B/Blues singers like Etta James, Bonnie Bramlett and (of course) Aretha Franklin, and with the command and ability of jazz singers like Sarah Vaughn and Diana Krall (especially when she does her solo jazz piano/vocal stuff). She has the lilt and musicality of singers like Corinne Bailey Rae and the contemporary urban soulfulness of Jill Scott. That musicality carries over into her instrumental ability as well, as showcased in both her solo jazz piano/vocal forays and her ensemble work.
Kira writes songs that reach people. Songs about all the things that make the world go ‘round…love, sex, triumph, failure, hope, and most everything else that matters to us all. From the totally groovatious “Sugar Man” to the anthemic self-realization piece “I Will Raise My Voice” her songs are filled with emotion, passion, heart and truth.
Kira Small and Bryan Beller are the real deal!

Lot 10: A Dazzling Dinner and Duet for six or seven - A lively evening for six or seven on Wednesday, April 27, 2011
Special guests: world-renowned pianist/composer Philip Glass and cellist Wendy Sutter Host: Margrit Biever Mondavi Chef: Richard Reddington of Redd Wines from the magnificent cellar of Margrit Biever Mondavi - Six VIP tickets to PHILIP GLASS, An Evening of Chamber Music Featuring Philip Glass and Wendy Sutter on Thursday, April 28, 2011
The stars will come out tonight! Share a brilliant evening with luminaries from the worlds of music, wine, and food. Six or seven lucky people will be guests of the brightest star in Napa’s firmament, Margrit Biever Mondavi, in her new home. You won’t have to look up in the sky to enjoy the sparkling brilliance of this evening. You’ll be wining and dining with two stars of the classical music world, Philip Glass and Wendy Sutter.
The new musical style that Glass was evolving was eventually dubbed “minimalism.” Glass himself never liked the term and preferred to speak of himself as a composer of “music with repetitive structures.” There has been nothing “minimalist” about his output. In the past 25 years, Glass has composed more than twenty operas, large and small; eight symphonies (with others already on the way); two piano concertos and concertos for violin, piano, timpani, and saxophone quartet and orchestra; soundtracks to films; string quartets; a growing body of work for solo piano and organ.
Acclaimed by the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many other publications, Wendy Sutter is one of the leading cellists of her generation. Holding an unrivaled mastery of the classical repertoire, Sutter's stunning performances provide a heartfelt intensity, garnering overwhelming praise from critics, and adoration from audiences around the world.
Your luminary from the world of food will be acclaimed chef-owner of Redd in Yountville and Margrit Mondavi’s personal favorite, Chef Richard Reddington..He will dazzle you with a delectable feast carefully paired with some truly stellar wines. Always the consummate hostess, Margrit Mondavi will share a bright constellation of wines specially chosen from her magnificent cellar.
After getting to know the musicians in this rarified atmosphere, it will take a while to come down to earth. To help with your re-entry, you will enjoy their performance at the Opera House the following evening. Your VIP seats await you.

By teaching them about proper investments and letting them practice while they’re still young.
Your grandchild, or perhaps your child or godchild, will be taught about the stock market with two in-depth visits to Sutter Securities brokerage firm. This lot will include two sessions at Sutter Securities in San Francisco:
During the first visit, the curious child will be given an extensive behind-the-scenes look at how a brokerage firm works. While you, the generous parents/grandparents, enjoy lunch at Sam’s Grill, the child will learn about stocks and bonds, the differences between public and private companies, why the stock market exists and how it works, and they will see a trading desk in operation. While an adult must be the custodian of this account, the child will participate in the opening of his/her own brokerage account that will include ten shares each of the common stock of ten companies listed above! For the first six months after opening the account, the child’s custodian may buy other stocks for the account commission-free. Please note that there will be a modest fee for selling stocks.
After six months, Bob will give the child a second hands-on session at Sutter Securities to review the portfolio. While you are dispatched for a leisurely lunch at Credo’s the child will receive a lesson in how and why his or her stocks performed the way they did during the six-month period. Lot 14: The Glitter, the Glamour, the Game. The LA Lakers and meeting their #1FAN three nights for two - Three nights for two in a Deluxe Guestroom at the Montage Beverly Hills
- Two seats at a Lakers home game during the 2010/2011 regular season in a Staples Center luxury suite close to center court
- “Meet and Greet” with the Lakers’ #1 Celebrity Fan
- Lunch or dinner for two at Bouchon, Beverly Hills
The quintessential LA experience. Two lucky folks will attend a regular season home game of the NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers, rub shoulders with the stars, stay at the Montage, shop till they drop, and dine at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon, Beverly Hills.
Beverly Hills has long been synonymous with glamour since the world's first motion-picture stars favored it with their lavish Spanish Revival estates in the 1920s. This chic city is now known worldwide for its unrivalled concentration of couture and designer boutiques, fine art and antiques galleries, exclusive auction houses and must-dine restaurants.
Montage Beverly Hills pays tribute to both old-style Hollywood and modern day luxury. The exterior, designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style complements the rich history and tradition of Southern California’s most celebrated neighborhood. Through every facet, Montage Beverly Hills embodies the essence of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
What is a stay in Beverly Hills without a dinner at a see-and-be-seen restaurant? You’ll enjoy a fabulous meal at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon in Beverly Hills. Thomas Keller needs no introduction, of course, but he has a special fondness for his more casual restaurant in LA.
And to top it all off, you get the ultimate LA sports experience. You’ll find yourselves ensconced in a luxury box near center court, watching the NBA Champion LA Lakers. The suite furnishings are exceptional, with plush sofas and comfy club chairs. And, based on availability, you’ll get to meet the Lakers’ #1 fan—you know whom!
Really now, is there any doubt? Jack Nicholson has had courtside seats for more than three decades, both at the Forum and Staples Center. And Jack is the consummate fan — he harangues refs, talks with opposing coaches, trash talks with players and rarely misses a game. He shows up in opposing arenas when the Lakers have made The Finals. Directors reportedly need to work their shooting schedules around the Lakers playing schedule. He seldom misses a home game.
Luxury accommodations…a Thomas Keller meal…luxury seats for a Lakers game…and a chance to meet Jack Nicholson. It just doesn’t get any better than this!
Valid: Date of Lakers game will be known in late September. Hotel stay based on availability; includes tax. “Meet and Greet” with Jack Nicholson based on availability.

Funds raised from this lot will contribute to three hugely important areas: Tech equipment: Projector, screens, splitters and mixers—equipment that sounds esoteric, but for the techies backstage these tools of the trade are vital: for attracting the finest performing artists; for fulfilling the requirements of programs like Talk Cinema; for bringing film festivals and premiere film screenings to the Napa Valley Opera House. Currently the Opera House must rent this equipment…if we owned it, the annual savings would be substantial.
Exterior Painting/Front Façade Did you know the NVOH is on the National Register of Historic Places? Chipping, peeling and other time- and weather-related wear and tear have rendered the façade shabby. Help us restore the front of Main Street’s “crown jewel” by contributing to paint, labor and equipment costs needed to get the job done.
State-of-the-art Web site: Designed by professionals specializing in performing arts, our sorely-needed new web site would have the capacity to promote events, manage ticket sales and drive online sales not only to the Opera House but also to other local businesses where people dine, shop, and vacation -- helping our neighborhood thrive.
Our needs might not be sexy, but they are critical. Raise your paddles to help fund the future!
And because the Napa Valley Opera House is a 501(c) (3) organization, your contribution to Funding our Needs is fully tax deductible. Index

Lot 18: Cuba six nights for four - Six-night trip to Cuba accompanied by professional photographer Jock McDonald
- Round-trip airfare San Francisco-Cancun-Havana
- Visas for all travelers
- Two nights, double occupancy, at a deluxe hotel in Cancun (en route to and from Havana)
- Four nights, double occupancy, at Hotel National in Havana
- Local guides in Havana
This is almost too good to be true! The Opera House is near-and-dear to Jock McDonald's heart since he's the son of Veronica diRosa, she who saved the NVOH from total dereliction and demolition by spearheading the restoration effort in 1989. Jock, a professional photographer who has made numerous trips to Cuba, will personalize this “ insiders’ excursion” according to the four travelers’ desires. Included in the trip is round-trip airfare from San Francisco to Havana through Cancun, with one-month visas. (You can choose to stay on at your own expense without Jock.) After a night in Cancun, you will have four nights in Havana, the city of color, light, music, dancing, and art: a city in constant motion.
In the 1950s, Havana was a vacation hotspot in the Caribbean. Old Town Havana has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Whether you enjoy the crumbling faded glory of the un-restored buildings or prefer the ones restored with new facelifts, you will be delighted by a city that was once considered as vibrant and important as Paris.
Accommodations in Havana will be at the magnificent Hotel National, which ranks among the world's most majestic hotels. Ride in "coco-taxis", cute two-seater, three-wheeled motorbikes to visit Habana Vieja where the main plazas are chock-full of museums and historic sights. Drink mojitos at La Floridita, Hemingway’s favorite Havana hangout. Visit Hemingway’s house in the outskirts of the city. Dine at the intimate and atmospheric Cuban Paladares. Spend an evening at the Tropicana, the original and still-reigning Queen of cabaret shows in Cuba. Explore the artist community of Havana. Take a day-trip to Pinar del Rio, where the best tobacco used for the more expensive cigar brands is grown. For whatever adventures you choose, a local guide is included. If you're interested in photography, what an educational experience it will be! No matter what you choose to do, Jock will make sure this personalized tour is the time of your life.
This trip is back by popular demand, after two groups last year found Cuba enchanting, exciting, and irresistible. “The place is from a different era. Havana’s faded beauty touches our hearts and makes us long to return.” “The Cuba trip gave us the gift of new friends. What a joy it was to get to know such wonderful people!” “Cuba is a place like no other. You enter a special world there…and leave with a new perspective.”

Lot 19: Paella-Palooza for twenty - Dinner for 20
- Authentic paella prepared by Gerard’s Paella
- Patz & Hall wines
- Hosts: Barbara and John Witt
A perfect party for you and your friends, paella, wine and music in a fantastic setting: a Paella-Palooza!
Barbara and John Witt will be your hosts at Whitehall Station among the St. Helena vineyards. This rustic-contemporary property, sitting on 12 acres of horse pasture in the shadow of Mt. St. Jean, is the perfect setting for a party of twenty.
For this classic Spanish meal, Gerard’s Paella will delight your senses. Studded with red peppers, green beans and yellow lemon, it is as much a feast for the eyes and nose as it is for the palate. Particular about his visual presentation, Gerard makes sure each paella can be eaten ‘with the eyes first.’
Of course, the key ingredient is the chef himself. Somehow everything tastes better when Gerard is around, telling stories, doling out smiles and bear hugs beside the paella pan and fire.
But he will not be the only entertainment for the evening. Fabulous flamenco guitar music during dinner will provide the feast for the ears. And the celebrated artisan wines of Patz & Hall will provide the oenological harmony.
The sights, sounds, aromas, and tastes will bowl you over! It’s a Paella-Palooza!

Lot 22: A Man. A Plan. A Canal. Panama Canal Voyage eleven nights for two - Panama Canal voyage on the beautiful, six-star Crystal Symphony, sailing March 6 - 17, 2011 from Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica to Miami
- All-day stops at ports of call in Aruba, St. Martin, St. Barts and Tortola
- Accommodations in a Category A deluxe stateroom with verandah
- $1,000 shipboard spending credit
- Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870 - 1914, by David McCullough
Among the great peaceful endeavors of mankind, the construction of the Panama Canal stands as an awe-inspiring achievement of engineering and vision. This link between two great oceans changed the world. Traveling through it just might change the way you look at the world as well. It belongs on your list of “must-see” destinations.
Here’s how to see it in style: from your private verandah aboard one of the top cruise ships in the world. A beautifully-appointed ship with a passenger capacity of only 922 guests, the Crystal Symphony is one of the most spacious cruise ships at sea and one of Condé Nast Traveler’s best ships in the world. You will enjoy this adventure in a deluxe (Category A) stateroom with luxurious amenities (a feather bed, plush duvets, Frette terry cloth robes, for starters) and a private verandah.
Departing Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica, the newly renovated Crystal Symphony enters the canal from the west. Fitting in the six massive locks with inches to spare, the ship is lifted and lowered 85 feet during the eight hours it takes to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic. (At Gatun Locks, 53 million gallons of water from Gatun Lake raises the ship, using only gravity to fill the massive lock. The feat is mind-boggling!) The entire Panama Canal transit is a fascinating journey through time and technology. You will see lush tropical rainforests while experiencing the thrill of one of the engineering wonders of the world. David McCullough’s book, Path Between the Seas, will help you fully appreciate the history and background of this wonderful adventure.
And that’s not all! After leaving the canal, you will explore the highlights of the Caribbean. You’ll spend an entire day at four of the most popular Caribbean ports of call, Aruba, St. Martin, St. Barts and Tortola before putting in at Miami on March 17.
With a $1,000 shipboard credit to spend as you wish, you may indulge in spa treatments, fine wines, a Vintage Room experience, gratuities for your favorite waiter, or something special from the boutiques.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy on board, in the spa or fitness center, or in the theater, casino or lounges. On this trip, there are guest speakers as well. You can enrich your understanding of current world affairs through on-board lectures by Major General Perry Smith (U.S. Air Force (retired), teacher, TV and radio commentator and author) and Dinesh D’Souza (described as one of the "top young public-policy makers in the country" by Investor’s Business Daily and author of several best-selling books).
Crystal Cruise luxury. Wonders of the World adventure. Tropical rainforest and the Caribbean. History, nature, culture, and romance. What a perfect opportunity to visit one of those “must-see” places in the world! A man. A plan. A canal: Panama.
Date: March 6, 2011 - March 17, 2011 Valid: Only on March 6, 2011 - March 17, 2011 cruise. No substitutions. Bid now by proxy (PDF)
